CHANEL 2.55

Chanel's well-known “2.55” takes its name from the month and year when Coco Chanel has launched the luxurious item: February 1955.

The burgundy lining that Coco herself placed in all black bags is the color of the uniforms at the convent where she grew up.

CHANEL "2.55" The History of the Legendary Bag
The quilted diamond on the exterior, it is inspired by several sources: the stained-glass windows of the abbey at Aubazine, where Coco Chanel grew up, by jockeys’ riding coats as well as by Coco’s own light-brown suede cushions in her rue Cambon apartment in Paris.

There is a zippered compartment at the inside of the front flap. That is where Chanel is rumoured to have stored her love letters in her original bag.

The revolutionizing shoulder strap - previously found on soldiers’ bags and the heavy satchels female bicycle porters carried during the war - are made for woman in modern times. Coco Chanel grew up in an orphanage/convent, therefore, the idea of the double chain shoulder strap comes from caretakers in the orphanage dangled their keys from their waists with the same type of chains as on the Reissue.

The backside has a back outside flap for storage of money.

The bag originally came with a front lock called “the Mademoiselle Lock” (as Ms. Coco Chanel never married). The double C lock was introduced since 1980s, called “Classic Flaps.

Easily style

You can combine this bag with jeans as well as with a suit or evening gown. The Chanel 2.55 doesn't depend on seasonal trends. If you take care of the bag even your grandchildren can use it!
